The Language of Tolkien's Middle Earth by Ruth S. Noel

I usually do this last, but if you are not a Tolkien nerd this book is definitely not for you. If you do want to learn elfish and other languages from the Lord of the Rings then maybe it is. This book talks about all the languages featured in LOTR and other Tolkien stories such as Numenorian and Quenya. I personally liked this book because I am a Tolkien fan, and it was interesting to learn about the languages in his stories. Again not for everybody, but of course, give it a whirl if you like. This is recommended for middle school because high school should be doing other things like studying Spanish, French or Arabic and not Elfish.

Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-Earth by J.R.R. Tolkien

This is a collection of stories and essays written by Tolkien, but not completed. It was edited by his son, Christopher Tolkien. It starts off with notes from Christopher Tolkien about each story. It then proceeds to move on to the stories. In all honesty any of the stories will be very hard to understand if you do not have any previous knowledge about any of the characters or any of the other Tolkien books. This book is definitely for hard core, die hard Tolkien fans. I felt that this was very hard to read even with knowledge of other Tolkien works. I think that this book is definitely for high school, but of course, as always, middle school can give it a whirl if they feel like it.

The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkein

The Silmarillion is about the First Age in Middle-Earth. It is a collection of stories written by J.R.R. Tolkien before the events of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. It very creative as Tolkien creates an entire pantheon of Middle-Earthen deities. The book starts off with the creation of the world, and how everything literally begins to go downhill from there. None of the characters in Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit appear (except for Olorin). There are many stories and many characters. I recommend this book to anyone, but just to give a clear warning, the book is written like a history book and should be read like one. If you don’t like reading history books, then maybe it’s not the best book for you.
